Earthwork Calculations
Calculate cut, fill and earthwork volumes from cross-sections, grid levels and spot-height data using established surveying methods.
Cross-Section Earthwork Volume
Enter cross-sectional areas and chainages. The calculator reports cut/fill volumes by the Average End Area and, when a middle section is supplied, the Prismoidal formula.
Section observations
| Section | Chainage | Cut area | Fill area | Remove |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ||||
| 2 | ||||
| 3 |
Use consistent area units and chainage units. Sections should be entered in increasing chainage order.
Volume method
Average End Area: V = L(A₁ + A₂)/2. Prismoidal: V = L(A₁ + 4Aₘ + A₂)/6, applied to consecutive pairs when a midpoint section is available.

Grid / Spot-Level Earthwork
Calculate cut and fill from a regular grid of existing-ground levels against a constant formation level. Enter rows of spot levels in survey units.
Grid settings
Existing level above formation = cut. Existing level below formation = fill.
Spot levels
Cut & Fill from Spot Points
Calculate earthwork quantities from irregular spot points. Each point contributes an influence area around its surveyed level.
Formation
Use this method for a set of spot levels with equal representative influence area. For irregular Voronoi/TIN areas, assign the appropriate area to each point below.

Earthwork Reference
Cut is material above the design/formation level; fill is material below it. Keep horizontal and vertical units consistent so that areas and volumes are meaningful. The prismoidal method is generally more accurate when a reliable middle cross-section is available.
