Offset Calculations

Compute perpendicular and oblique offsets, derive offset-point coordinates, and recover chainage and offset from observed coordinates.

Perpendicular Offset to a Survey Line

Give the line start coordinate, bearing, chainage and signed offset to obtain the foot and offset-point coordinates.

Baseline

Offset Observation

Enter the baseline and offset observation.

Oblique Offset

Resolve an oblique offset into its longitudinal and perpendicular components, then compute the resulting point coordinate.

Baseline

Oblique Measurement

The angle is measured from the forward baseline direction toward the selected side. At 90°, the oblique distance is a true perpendicular offset; at 0°, it lies along the baseline.
Enter the baseline and oblique observation.

Inverse Offset from Coordinates

Given two baseline points and an observed point, calculate the along-line chainage and perpendicular offset.

Baseline Points

Observed Point

Positive offset is to the left of the A→B direction; negative offset is to the right. A chainage of 0 is at A, and a chainage equal to AB is at B.
Enter baseline and observed coordinates.

Offset calculation reference

LatitudeΔN = d cos θ
DepartureΔE = d sin θ
PerpendicularOffset = r sin α
Along-lineΔchainage = r cos α

Perpendicular offset: first compute the baseline point at the specified chainage. A left offset uses the bearing rotated 90° counter-clockwise; a right offset uses a 90° clockwise rotation. Inverse offset: project the observed point onto the baseline direction to obtain chainage, and use the signed cross-product to obtain the perpendicular offset.

Survey Offset Calculation

Compute perpendicular and oblique offsets and derive offset-point coordinates for survey lines.

When to use this survey calculator

Offset calculations are useful for detail pickup, boundary work and line-based field observations. Confirm the reference line, offset direction and units before transferring a calculated point to field or CAD/GIS workflows.
