Transit Rule Adjustment

Balance a closed traverse by distributing latitude and departure misclosures according to their component magnitudes.

Transit Rule

Enter the observed traverse bearings and distances. The calculator derives latitude and departure, computes the linear misclosure, applies Transit Rule corrections proportional to the absolute observed components, and verifies the adjusted closure.

Starting Coordinate

Optional. If supplied, adjusted coordinates are calculated for every station.

Traverse Settings

Bearings are clockwise from North. Latitude = L cos θ; departure = L sin θ. North/East are positive.

Observed Traverse Lines

LineTo pointBearingDistanceRemove

For a closed traverse, use at least three lines and make the final line return to the starting station.

Enter the observed traverse lines to calculate the Transit Rule adjustment.

Latitudel cos θ

Latitude correction−ΣLat × |Latᵢ| / Σ|Lat|
Departure correction−ΣDep × |Depᵢ| / Σ|Dep|

The Transit Rule distributes latitude and departure misclosures separately in proportion to the absolute observed latitude and departure of each course. This makes the corrections depend on the component magnitudes rather than on line length.

Transit Rule Traverse Adjustment

Apply Transit Rule corrections to traverse latitude and departure misclosures.

When to use this survey calculator

Transit Rule adjustment distributes correction according to the relative latitude and departure components of the traverse legs. Inspect the original closure and observations before accepting adjusted coordinates.
